Teacher Notes -Biddy Mason: Open Hands, Open Heart

This unit is designed as a 4th grade language arts and social studies unit. At the heart of the unit is belief that as teachers, we have not taught the history of the westward movement if we present the European perspective but fail to tell the African-American, Latino, and Native American chapters in the building of California.

Biddy Mason's story transcends race, gender, or age. By reading, researching, and reflecting on her story of determination and courage, 4th grade students will meet California History-Social Studies Content Standard 4.3.

Even more important, by learning the story of Biddy Mason students will discover that, unlike a novel with its beginning, middle, and end, the history of California has many beginnings, middles, and ends.
