This project was developed to encourage students to learn on their own, with some guided references, and complete directions.  It was also developed to try to encourage students to see a correlation between other people in the world and themselves through looking at fitness levels and goals.  I hope to increase the students' knowledge of the body, themselves, how to begin their own exercise program, and how to maintain personal fitness.  This lesson lends itself to Physical Education and Health but could also be used in Biology, Anatomy, etc. in a high school that maintains courses in those subject areas.  This lesson is meant for high school level students.

It is important to emphasize to the students that when applying these ideas and principles in their own lives it is important to focus on their own personal improvement and not compare themselves to other people.  I go to the gym 4 days a week, religiously, and there are still people out there who are stronger and in better shape than I am.  Continually remind the students to focus on their personal goals and the health related issues, not how he/she looks compared to another student.  Personal fitness is about improving yourself any way you can.  Encourage the students to try one of the fitness programs presented and see if it works.  If  the program doesn't work ask the students to tweak it a little and see if their results improve.  Health is such a vast subject we could go on for days.  The main goal is to get the students to learn more about some basic health and fitness principles and hopefully give them some tools to use in their own lives.

One of the main goals of this project is for students to become "experts" in their personal area of the fitness project. However, I  also want the group to achieve a higher level of understanding about personal fitness in general.  My hope is to inspire students to learn more about how to maintain their health and physical appearance, and to give them tools and information to allow them to follow through on that inspiration.  This project is planned to take 10 periods on a block schedule with some work done at home.  I see this as a fairly lengthy project because I want the students to do it correctly.  Here are some suggestions of more things you can do with this project:

Advanced Students:

  • Have them search for the best health club on the Internet
  • Have them develop their own fitness club
  • Make them draw a muscle group in the body
  • Make them do a whole week long menu with caloric break down
  • Have them find a guest speaker in their recreation, training, or dietary role
  • Have them help a weaker student

Challenged Students: (teacher's discretion)

  • Cut their assignment in half for each section
  • Use their strength on the computer
  • Allow them to do less on the computer if necessary
  • Have them run the PowerPoint for their group rather than speak
  • Use your best judgment with your students - you know them better than anyone else!
