PowerPoint Tutorial
The Basics...

This page will take a little while to load because it contains many pictures...Please be patient.

How to get Started –
1. Open Microsoft PowerPoint on your Computer.
2. Click on Blank Presentation.

3. Go to the Format selection on the Tool Bar.
4. Select one of the following two options – Apply Design Template or Background.

a. Choose something that you would like to appear as the background in your presentation.
b. Choose your background with the tone of your presentation in mind; if you want to create energy, a more busy background may be appropriate, while a more subdued background may be appropriate for scholarly presentations.
5. Go back to the Format selection on the Tool Bar.
6. Select Slide Layout.
a. Choose the layout you want for that slide.
7. Click in the Text Box that you want to write in, and insert your text.

8. Once you have entered all of the text you want on that slide, you can begin with the fun stuff.

a. Go to the Insert selection on the Tool Bar.
b.  There you can select the Picture then Clip Art option from the list.

c. If you notice the top of this window there are tabs that you can click on for Pictures, Sounds, or Motion Clips.
d. Here you can preview and select items that you want to insert on the current slide.


 

9. When you are done inserting things into your current slide, the program will take you back to the slide that is active and you can re-size things and place them in the slide.

10. Go to the Slide Show option on the Tool Bar.

a. Select the Custom Animation option on the list.

b. When this comes up it will show a “mini” version of the slide.
c. There will also be an active box with tabs for Order & Timing, Effects, Chart Effects, and Multi-media Settings.

i. Order & Timing – This allows you to set the order of items coming into your slide.  You can bring them in with a mouse click or on the automatic timer setting.
ii. Effects – This allows you to change the manner in which items enter your slide and it allows you to add sounds to the entrance of items in your slide.
iii. Chart Effects - This allows you to animate charts that you may have in your presentation and give items in the chart cool entrances.
iv. Multi-media Settings – This allows you to decide whether or not you want music to continue playing while new items enter your slide etc.
11. Now you can move to the next Slide in your presentation.
12. On the Tool Bar you will find a picture of a slide with a “bright spot” in the corner.Click on it and a new slide will appear.

13. Start back at #5 and repeat it for the new slide.
 

All of the directions above will allow you to put together a good PowerPoint presentation for your students.  The following ideas will allow you to add some spice to your presentations when you feel more comfortable with the program.
 
 

Spicy Additions

Cool Stuff –

1. Insert Word Art:

a. Go to the Insert selection on the Tool Bar.
b. Select Picture.
c. Select Word Art.

d. Here you can insert wording that is a little more exciting and dramatic.  It will insert into your slide and you can re-size it and move it around.

2. Using Slide Transitions:
a. Go to the Slide Show selection on the Tool Bar.
b. Select Slide Transition.

c. Choose the way you want your slide to appear/disappear under the doggie or key.

3.Insert things from the Web:
a. You can minimize the PowerPoint window and get onto the net.
b. Once you find something you want to bring into your presentation you can right click on it (usually select Save Image As or Copy) and save it in a file on your computer.











c. When you return to the PowerPoint window you can go to the Insert selection on the Tool Bar and insert pictures, movies and sounds from files.  Select the file you saved your internet item in and insert it into your presentation.


4. Insert a Hyperlink:
a. Highlight or Select a piece of text or graphic in your slide.
b. While the text is highlighted go to the Insert selection on the Tool Bar.

c. This will activate a box where you can go to a CD in your CD Rom, the Internet, or Files on your computer etc.
