Students:
We are about to embark on a journey that will teach you the rules of golf, golfing skills, new games (Frisbee Golf and Ultimate Frisbee), and the joy of learning a sport that can last a lifetime.  In this unit you will take part in various activities to improve your skills in the game of golf, as well as, your knowledge of the basic rules and etiquette of golf in order to make you feel more comfortable on a golf course the first time you go to play.  I hope you enjoy the unit as much as I enjoyed creating it!

Introduction to Golf through the Internet...

Pictures compliments of  tigerwoods.com...

Students: I would like you to do the following for me to begin our introduction to the wonderful game of golf.  Please proceed to the link provided below and search for the following pieces of information:

1. Find as much information on the etiquette of golf as possible, i.e. What is proper attire?  Who shoots first on a shot?  What shoes are appropriate? etc.

2.  Find as much information on the rules of golf as possible, i.e. What do you do if your ball gets stuck in a tree?  How many penalty strokes do you receive for a drop?  Can you ground your club in the sand trap before taking your actual shot? etc.

3.  Look for any online instruction you can find on the golf swing.

4.  Find 3 facts about the history of golf that you find interesting.

What is Ultimate Frisbee???

Students: I would like you to go to the following Web site and print out a copy of the rules of Ultimate Frisbee so we can discuss them.

THANKS!

Ultimate Frisbee Rules...

Intro Instruction:

The Grip...

Instruction: Students- Hold the golf club in your dominant hand.  With your non dominant hand, reach out and "Shake Hands" with the golf club.  Take your dominant hand and grip the club so that you cover your thumb that is already on the club and wrap your hands around the grip.  Interlace your top hand index finger and your bottom hand "pinkie" finger.

( Don't worry, I will demonstrate these things while you are reading this!!!)

The Stance...

Instruction: Students - Sit the club behind the ball.  Bend your knees slightly (as if you were sitting on a stool).  Keep your back flat, your arms straight, and you head down.  Position the ball near the center of your body, somewhere in line with your front heel.
The Back swing...

Instruction: Students - As you take the club back your body should not rise and fall.  Keep your head down, and your knees bent.  Turn your hips toward your back foot, your front knee will collapse slightly as you turn.

Arms: While your lower body is working, your arms are rotating at the same speed as your hips.  Your front arm remains stiff, while your back arm bends at the elbow to position the club properly at the top of the swing.

The Swing...

through Contact...

Instruction: Students - As you begin your swing, lead with the front hip.  This will straighten your front leg and give you proper weight transfer.  As you let the club fall through the ball your arms will straighten and at contact the arms will be straight and your body weight will be out over the front foot.

Tips:

  1. - The head is always on the ball...
  2. - The shoulders stay level, they don't jerk up and       down...
  3. - The upper body and lower body work at the same speed...
The Finish...

Instruction: The hands come through at the point of contact and you "release" the club, or roll your wrists over.  Your weight is over your front foot, the rear toe drags slightly, the back is still flat, and notice the hips are pointed directly at the target...

Instruction: When the swing comes together it should look like the picture on the left...fluid from beginning to end...it looks effortless...

The Skill Test...

Due to the fact that whiffle golf balls are not very accurate, I have developed a rubric for teachers to use to evaluate the swing of the students in the class.  Here is a link to the rubric..

The Rubric...

The Written Test...

The written test is linked to this page...you may go and view it any time you would like to review questions and try to acquire any knowledge that you may miss on the test.
