Objectives:

This WebQuest is designed to meet the following objectives:

Help students discover the reality behind the myths of Dragons. 
Students will do four tasks that leads them along the path of discovery. 
Students will discover how dragons relate to ancient cultures. 
The tasks will include research on the web and any other resources they might have available. 
It will also include them researching, comparing and contrasting the differences between dragons of different civilizations. 
Students will research a specific dragon and be able to debate the different beliefs and qualities about their dragon. 
As a culminating activity students will have a choice as to if they want to make a multimedia presentation, write a story, write a play and present it to their peers or do a claymation about dragons.

California State Standards (6th Grade)

Starting the Process:

As a whole-class activity, help student to define the project by having them brainstorm the following three questions:

What do we know?
What do we need to know?
How is this relevant to ancient History?
Where can we find out what we need to know?

Record their answers on the board or overhead. Tell them a high-quality presentation will be the result of research and teamwork. Explain that they will be using the Internet as well as printed resources from the class and library.

Task Processes:

Tasks 1 and 2. Each student will complete these tasks individually.

Task 3. Students will team up with another student, research a specific dragon and culture. Student duties are as follows: One student will be recorder and the other student will be the researcher. Students will need to refine their debate roles using the debate link.

Task 4. Students will be grouped according to the dragon/culture they researched and debated in task 3. Students will decide upon the roles for the members of your group dependent on chosen activity.

Student duties are as follows:

Multimedia Presentation - Recorder, researcher, and 2 or more students designing the presentation.
Story - Author, researcher, illustrator, typist.
Play/Puppet Show- Playwright, Costume designer, stage designer, director.
Claymation - Cameraman director, playwright, character designer, background designer,
Length of project: 15-20 lessons depending upon the skill level of students

This project will take approximately 15-20 hours to complete. This will be dependent upon the number of computers available in the class and other resources. Teachers may need more time if they need to teach the students how to use Internet search strategies, learn presentation programs or other instruction needed for the culminating task.

Adaptations for Special Needs Students: Since this project involves research writing and multimedia elements, teachers may wish to assign students groups that the tasks with stronger students who will be able to assist them with reading. Teacher may allow special needs students to do modified tasks according to their needs.
