Assignment Description
In February of 2004, PBS first broadcast First to Worst. For this session we will review aspects of this documentary, which describes the rise and fall of the public education system in California.

1. Listen to the “California Report” broadcast (from February of 2004)
with “First to Worst” producer John Merrow.
Please Note: If your computer cannot open this file you might

the RealPlayer page, look to the top right for the “Free RealPlayer”
link. You Do Not need to pay any money or start a 14 day trial.
2. Read your group's California Education Timline event (see table below).
3. Read your groups' interview (See the table below).

Group Discussion: Part 1 - First to Worst Interview
- Facilitator keeps time and hosts Skype conference.
- Recorder 1 creates and posts summary (See Table Below)
Discuss your reading of your groups' interview. Include the following
in your discussion:
- What was interviewee's perspective on the cause, nature and
solutions of the problems with education?
- From what political perspective did the interviewee approach
the problems with education?
- How did their political perspective shape their perception of the
cause, nature and solutions of the problems with education?
- As stakeholders interested in a successful education system, how
did your group feel about the interviewee's perspective?

Discuss your groups timeline event. Make sure to include the following:
- What happened?
- When did it happen?
- How did it effect education in California?
- What is the current impact of your event upon education in
California?
- If you could go back in time and control events, how might
you change what happened to create a situation that would
lead to successful schools, which are based in equity, democracy
and pluralism.
