iMet: Internet Masters of Educational Technology

281 Tools and the Curriculum

Forum: Advanced Organizers and Web Design

03/08/09 Due Midnight: 03/21/09

"Ausubel is one of the few educational psychologists to address learning, teaching, and curriculum simultaneously. His theory of meaningful verbal learning deals with three concerns:
(1) how knowledge (curriculum content) is organized,
(2) how the mind works to process new information (learning), and
(3) how teachers can apply these ideas about curriculum and leaning when they present new material to students (instruction)" (Joyce, 2004).

Joyce, B. R., Weil, M., Calhoun, E. (2004). Models of teaching (7th ed.). Boston: Allyn and Bacon.

Assignment Part I

In Dreamweaver, create a web page(s) that includes the following:

  1. A brief discussion of your ideas regarding the use of Advanced Organizers in teaching and learning, especially as related to your locus of control.

  2. Annotated references (at least two) that you used to formulate your response
(do not to include references used in this or any previous assignment).
For help see: How to Prepare an Annotated Bibliography

  3. A lesson plan, workshop outline, training agenda or presentation that utilizes an Advanced Organizer (find your locus of control on this one, K-12, higher education, or professional training, this strategy is versatile and fun).

  4. * An Advanced Organizer—created using Inspiration, Kidspiration, Photoshop, iPhoto, iMovie, AppleWorks, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SnagIt, Camtasia, etc., etc.

(*Already completed during the previous assignment– you can choose to use the organizer created for the previous assignment or make a new one, your choice.)

Since your organizer was not created using Dreamweaver, you need to create a link from the image file to your Dreamweaver page or export it from Inspiration as an image in .jpg format or in some other format and link it to your web page.

Inspiration file format exporting instructions
export image from Inspiration available Inspiration file formats

In order for this to work properly, the organizer file or exported image you create MUST

  • be placed somewhere inside the web directory you defined for Dreamweaver (i.e. in side the 'root' folder). If you are not sure where to save it, then put it inside the folder you have made for the 281 class.

  • use NO SPACES or SPECIAL CHARACTERS in the file name

  • include the appropriate file extension (the 3 or 4 letters after the 'dot') located at the end of the file name for the tool you utilized.

Here is a partial list of possible extensions for various pieces of software you might use (please email if you are unsure how to name your document):
MS Word = .doc; Saving a graphic using photoshop as a JPEG = .jpg; or .gif; MS Excel = .xls; Adobe Acrobat = .pdf; Inspiration = .isf; AppleWorks = .cwk; etc. [After you create your organizer, then use the "Save As..." command to convert it into a different file format--for example, you use Inspiration to create a graphic and then save as a JPEG image.

Always keep your original document in its original format and save a copy with a different name. Thus, for many graphics you'll have two files:

    1. the original_file.isf (an original Inspiration file (or other type) that can be edited later and
    2. a copy_of_the_file.jpg (a copy in JPG format that is difficult to edit)

  • Common File Extensions
MS Word            .doc Excel              .xls Inspiration   .isf
Adobe Acrobat   .pdf AppleWorks  .cwk Photoshop*  .jpg
    Photoshop*       .gif

  • This can be tricky, troubleshoot, ask for help [NOTE: the linking of this advance organizer may stretch some software abilities--please remember that this is an approach to make the learning of the tool useful within your own locus of control--you can use a piece of software familiar to you or you can challenge your tool use. Remember you can email the imet12-L@csus list for help!]
  • Post your page inside your folder inside the iMET12 folder.

Email the list or Joyce if you need assistance.

Assignment Part II

Forum Post (due 03.21.09 midnight) must include the following items:

  • A Unique Title (in subject line) of your work.

  • A Brief Paragraph about your work and how it will be used in your locus of control.

  • The address of your web page (remember your link will be something like http://imet.csus.edu/imet12/portfolio/lastname_firstname/281/thefilename.htm

  • Two responses to peers on the forum
(look at two of your peer's work and offer constructive feedback).

[NOTE: because of the difficulty level of the assignment the due date is extended to 03/21/08. Please do not wait until the last minute to begin this assignment!
Support Saturday on March 14th is the place to get help!]
