iMet: Internet Masters of Educational Technology

282 Strategies for Application and Presentation

Flex e-mail summary due October 9, 2009

For this Flex assignment first you will read this article:

Concept to classroom Inquiry Based Learning

Next you should consider Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 is characterized by cooperation, participation, tagging, web-based applications rather than computer based applications, "the wisdom of the crowds", sharing creative content with less restrictive copyrights, and free, open source software.

If you are interested in definitions the Wikipedia definition is shorter than Tim O'Rielly's definition.

There are many MANY web 2.0 resources out there. I have tried to narrow these down to just a few of the main ones. You may know of others, and you are free to share them with your group. Choose one or more of the following to explore.

Links to Web 2.0 resources:

Edublogger
TeacherTube
PBWorks (formerly PBWiki -includes free option)
Google Docs
Flickr
Delicious
Slideshare
Tagging (definition)
Podbean

Once you have done the reading and investigating on your own, you will meet as a group.

As a group, meet to discuss your readings and how you will implement inquiry and web 2.0 in your project. You can meet in Tapped In, Skype, WebEx, Face to Face, or whatever method works for you.

Use the following to guide your discussion:

Other considerations:

  • Are there any barriers to implementing your ideas? These could be external barriers like firewalls and network policy for the younger grades or internal barriers such as reluctance to try unfamiliar technology for the older students.
  • What is the skill level of your students? Will they be able to learn the required technology while also mastering the content of the lesson?
  • How can you take an old topic (standard) and present it in a new way?

Suggested Agenda:

7:00 - 7:05 Sign in > Meet in facilitator's office > Select a facilitator, timekeeper, and recorder. Alternate these tasks from the September 30 session.
7:05 - 7:35 Each group member should select 1-2 sites to individually review during this time.
7:35 - 7:50 Reconvene with your group and share a brief summary of the sites you reviewed.
7:50 - 8:00 Break
8:00 - 9:00 Using the questions above, discuss how you might use the sites you reviewed for your project. If you have not decided on a final project direction, use this time to continue evaluating ideas and attempt to select one. You may also use this time to review your brainstorming ideas from the September 30th tapped in.
9:00 - 9:15

All members should assist the recorder in compiling a summary of your session. The summary should include:

1) the sites reviewed,
2) how you are considering implementing web 2.0 into your project.
3) something new each member gleaned from the session.

9:15 - 9:30 Check out - Post your summary as an e-mail to the IMet 12 listserve by midnight on Saturday, October 9.

Note about attachments to the list:
If you send an attachment to the list please make sure it is in a format that is accessible to everyone. This means saving MSWord documents in the .doc format rather than the .docx format.
