Introduction
For this assignment we will explore podcasts by finding and listening to examples, learning about subscribing and creating an audio podcast.
Assignment
The basic requirements for this assignment are to:
- Choose one of two topic options for your podcast (see Part III).
- Go through a series of production stages and create a podcast (see Part IV).
- Create a basic web page that includes your podcast.
- Upload your web page to the iMet Server
- Post the link to your podcast web page on the forum.
Please Note: Provided on this page, and via the associated links on this page, you will find everything needed to to create an audio file using a free, open-source software application named Audacity (for PC and Apple). You are free to use other software (such as Apple's Garage Band) if you like. You are also free to create a video podcast if you prefer, but a video podcast is NOT A REQUIREMENT. I want beginning podcasters to make a basic audio podcast, but I also want more advanced users to feel free to do higher level work if they choose - as long as the result is an audio or video podcast file on a web page that meets the criteria for one of the two assigned topic options.
Part I - Exploring, Downloading and Playing Individual Podcasts
There are thousands of Podcasts out there, many of which are free and can be played on the computer via software such as the windows media player or Apple's iTunes and from there transferred to mobile technologies such as iPods. For Part I of this assignment, I would like you to:
- Explore Podcasts from 1 or more of the following sites:
- Download and listen to 2 - 3 podcasts.
Part II - Learn about Subscribing to Podcasts
- Watch a solid and creative YouTube video explanation of RSS - RSS stands for "Rich Site Summary" or "Really Simple Syndication", depending upon who you ask.
- There is no need to do anything further on this step just look at a reader and subscribe to something if you would like to receive.
Part III - Choose a Topic for Your Podcast
You have 2 options for the content for your podcast:
Option 1: Create a podcast of your philosophy of teaching (probably the shorter task).
As part of your iMet portfolio you will create a Process Section. Part of the Process Section for most students, and an excellent element to include in an electronic portfolio, is a philosophy of teaching. Whether you are a teacher by trade or not, your iMet experience will hopefully lead you to be in a position to be an educational leader. Your actions as an educational leader should be guided by your philosophy. An audio version of your teaching philosophy would be an interesting addition to your portfolio.

Option 2: Create a podcast that could be used in instruction (Probably a longer task).
If you choose this option, you will create a podcast that might be used in teaching. This would be a podcast that students could listen to that teaches them a topic, exposes them to literature, teaches the steps in a process - anything that you as the instructional designer determine to be an effective use of podcasting.
