EDTE 286 - Technology and Modern Practices
Forum: Social Bookmarking
Assigned: Sunday 09/06/09: Due: Midnight - Saturday, 09/12/09
Introduction
This is another non-traditional Forum task where instead of sharing in a conversation,
we will be sharing Web 2.0 resources.
It was interesting seeing the applications you chose for the Web 2.0 Tapped in. There were many resources I had not seen before. As you discovered during your exploration of the GO2WEB20 site, there are many resources out there and new ones pop up every day. Trying to remember which site is for what use can make it hard to find the same site again. Bookmarking a site is a useful way to keep track of the sites that you visit, but wouldn't you like to share what you have discovered with friends and colleagues without having to email them the link?
There is a way to share these sites as bookmarks and to make them available from any computer...
Yes, it's delicious - a Web 2.0 application that allows individuals to interact and share as they locate, critique, describe and catalog web-based resources as a bookmarking community.
Task
Your task for this week's forum is:
- to locate at least 2 new (not from the 8/27 TI) and useful Web 2.0 resources and
- to share the links to your 2 resources via delicious.
How to Set Up and Use a delicious Account
Here's how you learn about, set up and use delicious. There are a lot of steps here, but it is not hard to do.
- Go to: http://delicious.com/
- Click the “Join Now” button at the top-right.
- Create a delicious Account:
- Fill in the “Enter Details Screen”.
- Email your account name (login name) to Joyce as soon as you have it set up.
- I will send out a complete list of delicious logins when I have everyone's login name.
Once you have completed this process:
- A small application should download to your computer.
Note: It is OK to run this application. It places the delicious Plug-in your browser.
- It should work in Firefox and Explorer. If you run Safari and have trouble there is a Safari delicious tool available.
- Though this process should be smooth, if you are not able to successfully download the application, you can return to the "Help" link at delicious: http://delicious.com/help or to the “Tools” link at delicious: http://delicious.com/help/tools.
- The next screen (Step 2) allows you to import your current bookmarks.
For now, click “Skip Step 2” on the right.
- On the next screen read: “How do I get started?” and “Save a new bookmark”.
- Add "aquitaine" to your delicious network:
- Login to delicious.
- On the next page, click on the “People” button on the top of the screen.
- Read the “Learn More” link on your “Network” Page.
- Click the “Add a user to Network” link at the top-right of your "Network" page.
- Under “Username” in the “Add a user to Network” window on the right, enter “aquitaine”.
- (...by the way...John's username is iMet_John and Vicki's is Vixie)
- Share: Locate 2 Web 2.0 Resources and "Tag" (Save) them with your Web Browser's new
delicious tools:
- When the "Save a Bookmark" window opens:
- Give the bookmark an clear and meaningful title.
- Give a very brief but clear description of the function.
- Under Network Tags, click "for:aquitaine".
(Note: If you do not see "for:aquitaine" in this window, something likely went wrong in step #6 above)
- Classify it by clicking the "Popular Tags" at the bottom of the window that describe the link and choose the description or category you think best fits the link.
- There is no actual 'posting to the forum' for this assignment. When you have shared the 2 new (not from the 8/27 TI) and useful Web 2.0 resources with me “aquitaine” your task will be complete.
- To see if anyone has shared links with you:
- Login in to delicious
- Click on the "Bookmarks" button at the top of the page.
- Click the "Inbox" link on the right beneath your name on the bookmark page.
- To save the bookmark in your bookmarks, click the "Save" link next to the title of the bookmark.
- Describe it and tag it for your collection.
I can't wait to see all of the great links that imet 12 finds and shares!
