• Travel to The Hobbit Name Generator to learn your name. When your name has been revealed, record it in your journal.

• Read about the general appearance of Hobbits at this site and then sketch yourself as a Hobbit.

Explain why all of the dwarves show up at Bilbo's hole. Make sure to include a description of Gradnalf. Sketch what you think the mark on Bilbo's door might have looked like as part of your answer.

Finally, record your feelings as a Hobbit who is embarking on a grand and dangerous adventure. Are you scared, excited, worried? Why are you embarking on this adventure?

* Your Second Quest *

As you begin your journey with Bilbo and the Dwarfs you encounter goblins in a house. After a brief struggle they are turned to rock and you and your elf-friends find their hidden stash of gold and weapons. Grandalf and Thorin each get special swords, and Bilbo gets a small dagger. Each of these items has a name and a special history. Select your enchanted object and sketch it in your journal. Be sure to include a short description of what it is, what it looks like, and its history.

• After a long trek you and your traveling companions come to Rivendell. Read this description of Rivendell. It occurs to you that you may get lost trying to come back. You decide that it would be a good idea to start drawing a map of your journey. Do so in your journal. Include all names of places.

• Now you and your friends rest for a few days and set out for the Misty Mountains. As you are spending the night in a cave, the Goblins appear out of the back of the cave and drag you away. Eventually, you are able to escape the Goblins but wind up lost and alone with Bilbo. Go to the Maze Maker and create a Misty Mountain Maze. Follow these instructions carefully!

1) Go to the Maze Maker site for rectangular mazes. Leave all the settings alone, BUT CHANGE "Path Width" TO 10 PIXELS. Now select "generate maze."

2) Wait for the maze to finish loading. You can launch "AppleWorks" and open a new drawing document. (Find AppleWorks on the harddrive and launch the program by double clicking on it. When asked for a document type, select "drawing." Now turn the page on its side by going to the "File" menu and selecting "page setup." Now push the button to set the page on its side. Click OK.

3) Now that the maze has finished loading, go back to your browser and click and hold (right click for PC users) on the maze. Select "copy image" from the menu.

4) Click back into AppleWorks and click in the middle of the blank page. Now go to the "Edit" menu and select "paste." Your maze should now be on your blank page. Move it to where you want it to be. Create a title, and create labels for the Hobbit Cave (beginning) and the North Passage (ending). When you are finished labeling, print the maze and add some of the dangers in the Misty Mountains to dead end passages on your maze (Gollum's Lake, Goblin rooms).

*Your Third Quest*

You and Bilbo have a terrifying encounter with Gollum while you are exploring the passages of the Misty Mountains. You are only able to escape for two reasons; your clever wit and the magic ring. You use your wit to defeat Gollum in a riddle contest. In order to assist others that may find themselves with the same situation, you decide to create a small collection of some of the most clever riddles that you've heard. Go to this site and collect some of your favorite riddles and their solutions. When you have collected AT LEAST 5 riddles, record them all in your journal and move on to the next item.

Finally, you and Bilbo escape from the Goblin infested Misty Mountain and meet up with your traveling companions. You travel down to the valley below and become trapped by a group of wolves. Luckily, Grandalf is able to set them on fire and his friend, the King of the Eagles, saves you and your friends from the fire. It occurs to you that you are starting to make a lot of friends and enemies on your quest. You had better start writing down a list of all of your allies (friends) and enemies. Record your list of all of your friends and enemies in your journal. You will be asked to record the names of all friends and enemies that you meet later on your quest.
