Long Vowel Sounds

(Available as Word document)

"Bingo" and "Old MacDonald" are two well-known songs used here with changed lyrics to affect practice articulating the long vowel sounds of the letters A, E, I, O, and U.    In addition to singing, students are encouraged to participate with movement: practice signing the letters using American Sign Language; practice forming the letters on the desk or in the air with a finger.

To the tune:"Bingo"
"There was a farmer had some vowels and long sounds were there name-o.
        A-E-I-O-U, A-E-I-O-U, A-E-I-O-U, and long sounds were their name-o."

Initial Consonant Sounds
Using "Bingo", think of an animal that begins with a consonant and sing using long vowel sounds. For example: "There was a farmer had a bird and B was his name-o. Ba, Be, Bi, Bo, Bu," etc.

To the tune "Old MacDonald". Sing all vowels with a long sound
"Old MacDonald had some vowels, A-E-I-O-U.
And on his farm he had some As, A-E-I-O-U.
        With an A - A, and an A - A there,
        Here an A, there an A, everywhere an A - A.
Old MacDonald had some vowels, A-E-I-O-U."
Repeat the song for each of the remaining vowels.

The next three songs are sung on the pitches so and mi. Please see Singing for more information.
