SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIERSUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER
This is one of the four team teaching projects that the sophomore English teacher and the Computer Application teacher assign their students. This assignment incorporates the book Summer of my German Soldier and Microsoft Publisher. Students read the book and then, in teams of three or four, develop a Literary Newspaper pulling facts from the novel, as well as from the time period in which the novel was written (1940-1944). Students research WWII, Nazi POWs, Japanese Internment, war propaganda, and other issues from the novel using books and articles found in the library, as well as Internet research.
Students learn about different types of newspaper articles, discuss editorial cartoons, news articles and editorials, while they are reading the book. While, discussing various chapters, students brainstorm on butcher pagper ideas for news articles, editorials, features, Dear Abby's etc.
Using Microsoft Publisher, students in groups of three or four, will design and develop a Literary Newspaper.
