CAHSEE ON TRIAL

A WEBQUEST FOR CALIFORNIA TEACHERS

This staff development lesson was developed as part of iMET, a Masters in Education, requirement through California State College, Sacramento.

There is a lawsuit from a student (and his parents) who did not pass the math portion of California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE), and thus did not graduate high school.  He/she is suing both the school district and all members of the math department of the high school.

The person doing the webquest is one of the attorneys for the district and teachers who is trying to find as much information and background on the CAHSEE as possible to prepare a defense.  This would include all the available resources that teachers could use, background on the CAHSEE, what other states are doing about their own Exit Exams, the statistics on student failure rates (including demographics), and to what extent that the district has made a good faith effort to provide the education needed to pass the CAHSEE.

Task

Your task is to find out if both the teachers and the school have made a due diligence effort to provide the necessary curriculum and opportunities to enable all students to pass the CAHSEE.   Provide  documentation in the form of a powerpoint presentation to present to a judicial representative and district staff.

Learners

This lesson is intended to make teachers aware of the available resources in preparation for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).   Teachers should at least be aware of what the CAHSEE is and some of it’s ramifications for students.

Curriculum Standards

Teachers will learn background on the CAHSEE, the available CAHSEE resources for math teachers, the people and groups involved in CAHSEE litigation, what other states are doing about High Stakes Testing, and some possible implications for students who fail to pass the CAHSEE.
