Winning the Lottery...Could you be next???

A Probability Webquest

Evaluation

Your project will be graded using the following components:
1. PowerPoint Presentation which includes:
- A short description of how to play the game and all the ways you can win.
- How you calculated the odds of at least 3 ways of winning
For example:For SuperLotto I would show how to calculate the outcomes of choosing 5# and the mega#, 5# and no mega#, 4# and mega
Use permutation & combination notation where appropriate. You may use P(n,r) or n_P_r
- The probabilities of each outcome.
-Your recommendation to play or not play and why.
EXTENSION: Calculate the probability of other unrelated events to put the probability of winning the lottery into perspective.

2. Class Presentation
3. Math Journal...Typed or neatly written project notes which include:
- Calculations of all of the possible outcomes for 2 of the lottery games.
- Response to reflection questions.
Each student will turn in their own project notes. See math journal rubric below for grading criterion.

Computation of Combinations and Permutations Makes major errors. Makes some errors and it is unclear if they are aware of proper problem-solving procedures. Makes minor computational errors. Makes no computational errors.
Effects Effects are limited or not present. One or more than one type of effect is used; however, some or all effects detract from presentation. One or more than one type of effect is used; however, some or all effects detract from presentation. Effects are varied, yet cohesive, and they significantly enrich the presentation.

Mechanics

Text contains many spelling/grammar errors. There is carelessness throughout.

Text contains some spelling/grammar errors.

Grammar and spelling are nearly flawless. Logical sequence apparent. Images are relevant, and complement the text. Each image is cited in the text and identified. The number of images is appropriate.
Slide Design Many pages are either cluttered or empty. There is no text/image balance. No attention paid to variation in design

Some pages are either cluttered or empty. Inconsistent attention paid to sizing of graphics, placement of graphics and text, and text wrapping

Most pages contain well-placed objects, with thoughtful text/image balance. Inconsistent text wrapping

Objects on all pages are well placed and sized. Pages are not cluttered or empty. Imaginative and logical text wrapping.

Presentation Not much content and not too pleasing to watch. Looks good but not much there. Includes all required material and pleasing to watch. Has it all and reflects mastery of material.
Use of time in computer lab Frequently off task. Wasting time. Wastes some time, but usually returns to task. Almost always on task, very little time wasted. Always on task, no wasting of time.
Math Journal 1. Beginning 2. Developing 3. Accomplished 4. Exemplary
Computation of Daily Derby or Daily Three odds Makes major errors. Makes some errors and it is unclear if they are aware of proper problem-solving procedures. Makes minor computational errors. Makes no computational errors.
