Introduction

Anyon's article, though now over 25 years old, represents a seminal work in the field of education and social justice. Your task as a group is to:

  1. Read the "Introduction" link below.
  2. Read your group's link (portion of the article).
  3. Elect a presenter for your group and prepare to report back to the group on the following:

    • What was your school type (Working Class, Middle Class, etc)?

    • What was the income level of the school?

    • How were parents in this community employed?

    • What was the nature of the curriculum in Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies at your school?

    • What was the nature of classroom management at your school?

    • As a group, discuss how differences in the educational experiences of various economic class communities exists today as compared with the status described in Anyon's article from 1980.

      • Are things the same? Better? Worse?
      • How is this situation impacted by accountability measures such as those found in No Child Left Behind.
      • What, if anything should be done?

  4. Be prepared to have your presenter report back to the group.
